Tick for crossing

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - NEWS -

SOUTH Perth MLA John McGrath believes a new east-west Swan River crossing either by bridge or tunnel as an extension of Berwick Street could provide an answer to growing traffic congestion in the suburb.

The proposed crossing is part of the Perth Transport Plan @ 3.5 Million and Beyond, which was unveiled by the State Government recently.

Under the plan the new river crossing would take traffic via a bridge or tunnel to link with Riverside Drive and then via a tunnel to the western suburbs.

Mr McGrath said diverting Riverside Drive to accommodate Elizabeth Quay had increased traffic significantly through South Perth’s major thoroughfares – Mill Point and Labouchere roads.

“During peak period motorists have been using these arteries as an alternate means of access to the CBD and beyond,” he said.

“We must fix this congestion problem. The planned new river crossing seems to be a practical long-term solution.”
