Seniors invited to get on Track for fitness
BELMONT seniors have been encouraged to put on their walking shoes and head for the great outdoors as part of the SilverSport program.
The Bibbulmun Track Foundation has teamed up with the Department of Sport and Recreation to offer individual memberships for one year for $30.
SilverSport allows eligible seniors to apply for financial assistance to contribute towards sporting club memberships or physical activity program fees up to $200 each.
Members can take part in about 20 Sunday social walks and over the hill events.
“Staying active as we get older is particularly important and regular walking is the ideal exercise,” foundation executive director Linda Daniels said.
“If we are physically active, our circulation improves and we have increased bone and muscle strength and improved digestion.”
Ms Daniels said being physically active was also important for mental health and wellbeing and great for connecting with the community.
Being active helps us all regardless of age or ability, she said.
