Scorchers stars to shoot for success
SOUTH PERTH cricketers Piepa Cleary and last season’s WACA Female Rising Star winner Katie Hartshorn have been signed to play for the Perth Scorchers in the Women’s Big Bash League.
Cleary is a talented young bowler who showed her promise with 12 wickets in 14 games during the 2013-14 season after debuting in December 2012.
Hartshorn is a young leftarm spinner, who debuted in the WNCL with Tasmania back in 2011.
She moved to Perth and linked up with the Western Fury in 2015.
WA-raised Shooting Star player Cleary is joined by fellow Shooting Stars Megan Banting, Heather Graham and Chloe Piparo in the squad.
Scorchers coach Lisa Keightley was rapt to secure several local promising players for another season, with the Shooting Stars quartet all 21 or younger.
“It’s fantastic to keep together our group of up-andcoming local players who are beginning to get opportunities at representative level and helped us make the WBBL semi-finals last season,” Keightley said.
“We’re looking for Piepa Cleary to complement our bowling attack in WBBL 02 and we see Chloe Piparo as a key batswoman moving ahead.
“Katie Hartshorn was a revelation last season with 13 wickets and we’re hoping she will only get better with more experience at the elite level.”
The Scorchers start their WBBL 02 campaign against the Hobart Hurricanes in Sydney on December 10.
The Perth Scorchers WBBL 02 squad comprises Megan Banting, Suzie Bates, Emma Biss, Nicole Bolton, Mathilda Carmichael, Piepa Cleary, Lauren Ebsary, Heather Graham, Katie Hartshorn, Emma King and Chloe Piparo.
Four spots remain vacant on the Scorchers roster for the campaign.
