New faces needed

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - OPINION -

THE people behind the South Perth Learning Centre are looking for younger people to breathe fresh air into the institution.

An AGM will be held this Friday during which a new chairperson, secretary and committee members will be elected.

The meeting will be Kevin Trent’s last as chairman as he is moving to York after 10 years as a member and two years as chairman.

Mr Trent said he was sad that he was moving on but keen to recruit more people for the organisation.

“It started as a place where people could make friends and socialise; one of those people might have been a potter and so they taught pottery,” he said.

“It has grown from being at the back of a church to a home and now at the refurbished civic centre, where we are able to hold four or five classes at a time.

“There are arts, languages and even a group who get together to talk about international affairs.”

Mr Trent said the committee was looking for younger people to get involved with the centre.

“There is a bit of concern from the City of South Perth, who are our landlords, that the topics that are being delivered are more for people at senior citizens centres,” he said.

“We are looking for younger people to come in and help out and although we have someone lined up to be the next chairperson, we are open to other people.”
