Friday night lights out for Redbacks

TEAM’S WOMEN AND MEN LOSE IN QUARTERS

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - SPORT -

THE season ended for the Perth Redbacks men’s and women’s teams on Friday night after both teams lost Game 2 of their quarter-final clashes.

The women’s team lost 5677 to the Rockingham Flames and the men’s team lost 78-103 to the Joondalup City Wolves, with both games at the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre.

In the men’s game, the Wolves played without Perth Wildcats player Greg Hire but they had enough players stand up in his absence and they were on top of the Redbacks virtually from the outset.

The Wolves dominated the boards with 54 rebounds to just 36 from the Redbacks while Joondalup forced Perth into 20 turnovers and scored 25 points from those.

The frustrations of knowing their season was over boiled over late in the game for the Redbacks as well, with Michael Vigor frustrated at a tough call, leading to him fouling out, while coach Nik Lackovic received a technical foul and Jourdan DeMuynck grew a little frustrated with some of the visiting Wolves fans.

DeMuynck never stopped trying for the Redbacks, finishing with 26 points and 10 rebounds.

Ben Smith finished with 16 points, three rebounds and two assists in his 200th SBL appearance.

Joel Wagner ended up with 10 points, three rebounds and three assists for Perth but big men Vigor (nine points, three assists) and Lewis Thomas (seven points, eight boards, three assists, two blocks) were not able to have the impact they hoped.

In the women’s game, Sami Whitcomb caught fire early for the defending champion Flames and nailed 18 firstquarter points and from there Rockingham was never seriously threatened by Perth.

Despite Whitcomb’s dominance, the Flames only led by five points at quarter-time but that stretched by 16 by halftime and then 21 by the final buzzer as they advanced to another semi-final series, while the Redbacks’ greatly improved season came to an end.

Jess Jakens battled hard for the Redbacks inside, ending the night with 17 points and eight rebounds, with Rebecca Benson contributing 17 points as well. Chris Pike
