‘NO WIN’ OPTION DISAPPOINTS
THE City of South Perth Residents Association is disappointed to see that at the recent annual Western Australian Local Government Association conference, a soft option was taken against the Development Assessment Panels process.
Instead of voting to take the stance to scrap the process completely, the conference only voted to ask for an independent review into the system.
The association does not believe the outcome was a win for the community as suggested by the Town of Victoria Park and the City of South Perth representatives, but as a win for the Barnett Government’s continued attack on the democratically elected local councils.
Given that more than 15 councils have already raised concerns with the panels and have voted to scrap them, these councils now have to go against their ratepayers’ requests and settle for a “no win” situation.
Developers will continue to use the system to get around local council planning regulations with no regard to local council guidelines or the residents.
The association will continue to lobby its council and the State Government in seeking to have the DAP process abolished and leave the approval of building developments in the hands of local government. CECILIA BROOKE, chairwoman, City of South Perth Residents Association Inc
