Inspiration on the track
CHILDREN at the Victoria Park Phoenix Little Athletics Club were inspired by their idols at the Olympics during their first week of the season.
THE kids at the Victoria Park Phoenix Little Athletics Club have been inspired by their idols at the Olympics.
Last week marked the first week of the season for the club and saw an increase in kids signing up.
Victoria Park Phoenix Little Athletics Club president Sam Hardcastle said about 30 kids signed up during a registration day and two sessions at its training base at the East Victoria Park Primary School.
“We are on track for a bumper year following the Olympics, just like many other athletics and swimming clubs,” she said.
“I think a lot of the kids have watched the Olympics and thought that they wanted to have a go; who doesn’t want to throw something that looks like a spear?
“People think Little Athletics is for kids who are athletic but it’s actually for kids who haven’t tried the events before to have a go.”
Ms Hardcastle said there was a focus on jumping and middle-distance running during the first two sessions and events were modified for kids.
