Jacket steals the show

A JACKET adorned with postcards has proved to be a good fit for Genevieve Armson.

The Carlisle resident took first place in the textile design category at the Perth Royal Show.

Dr Armson said despite winning numerous first prizes at the show in the past, the success was significant.

“I was thrilled with the win and the feedback from the judges was very valuable,” she said.

“I’ve been sewing since I was a little girl and my grandmother was a milliner and my aunts were dressmakers.

“I always try to create something original and unique; the creative aspect of textiles is something I really enjoy.

“Because I’ve been sewing for so many years, I’m always looking for a challenge and that’s how the idea of the jacket came about. The postcards were from tea towels that I bought in Broome and I was inspired by my love of the town.”

Dr Armson said she put a lot of effort into the jacket and she was pleased with the results.

“It takes hours and hours to put it all together; I worked over a number of weeks on the jacket,” she said.

“Whenever I create something, my initial thoughts are that it’s the worst thing I’ve ever done.

“But when I finished the jacket I was pretty pleased with it.

“I like the colours and the idea of it.”
