Old photos bring suburb’s history back to life
LORRAINE Heldberg won the City of Belmont’s Local History Photographic Competition with her 1949-50 photograph of herself and her dad Dave Jones at the family home in the former suburb of Newburn.
The competition invited participants to provide historical photographs that had some connection to Belmont with the theme of family.
Mayor Cr Phil Marks said there were 95 photographs from 18 entrants this year.
“We had a very difficult task of deciding on one winning photograph – so we decided on two commendable photos be awarded,” he said.
The highly commended winners were Tay Alers for his 1951 photograph of the Paal family at the home they were building for themselves at 121 Belgravia Street in Belmont and Richard WJ Evans for his 1952 photograph of himself aged six with little brother Kenneth aged four, in the backyard of their family home at 290 Surrey Road, Kewdale.
