Row coach now at Freo

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - WORKPLACE -

COULD an international rowing coach be Fremantle’s biggest pick-up of the 2016 off-season?

The Dockers have brought on board Tom Morris, the former Australian and Canadian national rowing coach, who has slipped into the new position of coaching high performance manager.

Reporting directly to football operations manager Chris Bond, his aim will be to ensure senior coach Ross Lyon, his assistants and development coaches are passing on the right information to the playing group.

“We believe that securing a person of Tom’s calibre and expertise at elite level high performance coaching will play an important role in achieving that aim,” Bond said.

“Tom has worked with coaches and sports science staff at a national level in Australia and Canada preparing athletes for Olympic competition.

“He will work closely with our coaching team to be high performance coaches in their individual areas.”

Morris was a senior coach of the Canadian national rowing team that won silver at the Rio Olympics and gold at the World Rowing Cup in Switzerland in May.

He has had stints with the Australian national rowing team, WA State rowing team, Australian Institute of Sport and WA Institute of Sport.

“I look forward to working with the coaching team at Fremantle and adding a positive new dimension to the program with the aim of further developing standards in the coaching group to ensure both athletes and coaches are fully supported in the pursuit of peak performance,” he said.
