Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - LIFESTYLE - Sophie Moore

TESS Woods never dreamed of becoming an author, let alone a best-selling one.

But inspiration struck after she saw the first Twilight film and a love story appeared fully formed in her mind.

“I went home and sat down and wrote the whole thing out by hand over three days,” she says.

That story would go on to become her first novel, Love at First Flight.

Ms Woods laughed when she said the book had nothing to do with teenagers and vampires.

“But I’ve always been attracted to that kind of love story, like in Bridges of Madison County, about women in love who can’t do anything about it,” she said.

The book was published by HarperCollins in August and has been wellreceived by critics and readers alike.

A second book, Beautiful Messy Love, has just been finished and is scheduled to be published in July 2017.

Although she aims to eventually publish one book a year, Ms Woods said she was not yet at the stage where she could give up her day job as a physiotherapist.

“I only know five other Australian authors who still work full-time and write. I’m sort of in no-man’s land at the moment,” she says.

She said her husband had been very supportive of her new career.

“For a while he was walking around all smug, saying people would think I’d based the sex scenes on him,” she said.

“Then when the first copy came out and he read the blurb he suddenly realised it was about an affair. It only took him seven years!”

Ms Woods will be at Dymocks in Belmont for a book signing event at 1pm on Saturday, November 19. “This is my first ever public book signing, so I’m a bit nervous,” Ms Woods said. Store manager of Dymocks at Belmont Forum Belle Juhas-Gao said she was very excited to host a book signing with a local Perth author.

“We feel it’s important to support homegrown authors and Tess Woods is a favourite of the staff. Love at First Flight has been selling extremely well and it’s one we highly recommend to all our readers,” she said.
