Students fast learners

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - NEWS - Aaron Corlett

A GROUP of Wesley College students sped ahead of the competition to win an electric vehicle race.

Year 11 engineering students Fraser Patten, Matthew Sarich and Sam Smart took out the ITC Global Perth Electric Vehicle Challenge, held in Wundowie on October 29.

The team beat other schools as well as organisations such as Synergy and Edith Cowan University to claim the award.

Fraser said the process of making the electric vehicle started at the beginning of the year when they were told about the competition.

“The school had won the competition in the past two years so we looked at how previous students did it and then used our own idea,” he said.

“Petrol vehicles are used day to day so it was a very interesting to see how fast electric vehicles could go.

“Putting the vehicle together is not as complicated as you may think, we used a wheel hub motor. We had practical and theory lessons each week as we put the vehicle together.

“We went down to the last minute to finish the vehicle, the competition was on a Saturday and we only finished it on the Thursday,” he said.

“It was an endurance race that lasted an hour with the winner being the team that completed the most laps.

“I drove it first and when I got out, the other guys were dumbfounded and told me I had broken three consecutive lap records.

Wesley’s second-fastest car came second in the senior school division and fifth overall.
