Sailors up for Paralympic team of year
VICTORIA Park resident and Paralympic champion Colin Harrison has been listed as a finalist for the Paralympic Team of the Year award alongside his teammates as part of the Australian Paralympic Awards to be held on Thursday in Sydney.
Four-time Paralympian Harrison teamed up with Russell Boaden and Jonathan Harris to win gold in the threeperson keelboat sonar event at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, finishing ahead of the United States and Canada.
They were dominant throughout their Games campaign, finishing first in three races and second in four.
Harrison became a right arm amputee after several operations and a course of radiotherapy to treat cancer in his shoulder.
Australian Paralympic Team chef de mission Kate McLoughlin said the Australian Paralympic Sailing Team dominated in the water.
“While it’s a shame that sailing has been removed from the Paralympic program in 2020, the entire team can be incredibly proud of their achievements and can know that they’ve created a legacy and a name for Australia in their sport,” she said.
