Police promise big crackdown on crime

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - STREET WATCH -

WA POLICE will saturate Perth suburbs in a bid to crack down on crime across the city.

Departing from tradition, police will run a combined Christmas and summer campaign from now until the end of February.

Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan said Operation Celsius would involve multiple police divisions working together.

In Beeliar recently, traffic police – collaborating with general duty officers and supported by an automatic number plate recognition camera and a booze bus – tested passing motorists while just a few kilometres away, meth teams were kicking in doors.

Among the discoveries found by police executing search warrants were firearms and a clandestine drug lab.

“This is going to be the pattern for the whole summer – combined operations, saturating suburbs and focusing on all types of offences,” the Commissioner said.

“We’re not just looking at traffic offences.

“We’re trying to get on top of the crime spikes we see sometimes in our summer period.”

The Commissioner said the strategy, which involves the biggest collaboration between units WA Police has seen for some time, would rotate through suburbs Karl O’Callaghan. “all around the metropolitan area”.

“We’re in Beeliar today. We’ll be in another suburb tomorrow,” he said.

Arterial roads out of Perth will be monitored, particularly over the Christmas and New Year period.

Police Minister Liza Harvey said officers would also utilise recent legislation changes over the coming months.

Among the changes are harsher penalties tied to graffiti and out-of-control parties, and the introduction of alcohol interlocks,

WA police meth teams have also been boosted with extra interpreters, legal officers and intelligence analysts working to stop the supply of the drugs into the state.

“Police will have all of those tools at their disposal to really crack down on volume crime, anti-social behaviour and unlawful driving activity,” the minister said.
