was a part of the four-per­son UWA Homeward Bound team, which made up a por­tion of the 76 women from around the world who went on the trip to im­prove their lead­er­ship skills and to learn about science hap­pen­ing around the world.

“The cost of the trip was $25,000 per per­son, which is an enor­mous amount, but we fundraised and half the cost was paid by UWA,” Mrs Fitzger­ald said.

“The idea be­gan with lead­er­ship ac­tivist Fabian Dat­tner, who dreamed of a so­lu­tion to the is­sue of too few women be­ing in lead­er­ship roles.

“She linked up with Antarc­tica re­searcher Jes­sica Mel­bourne-Thomas and they came up with the idea of an ex­pe­di­tion.”
