An amazing day out
About 50,000 people are expected to flood the South Perth Foreshore during the afternoon on Australia Day for games and activities, such as the Maze Box.
ABOUT 50,000 people are expected to flock to the South Perth Foreshore for activities during the afternoon on Australia Day.
The day’s celebrations will begin with a ceremony at 8am, which includes a flagraising ceremony, citizenship ceremony and the presentation of the Australia Day WA Citizen of the Year Awards before a barbecue morning breakfast.
The Celebration Zone starts from 3pm to 7.30pm, which includes about 100 free and fun activities suitable for toddlers through to adults.
About 150,000 people are then expected to watch the City of Perth Skyworks fireworks display from the South Perth Foreshore.
One of the attractions during the afternoon is the Maze Box, which has come from Belgium and is set to thrill kids.
City of South Perth events manager Peter Roaen said the attraction was something he used to organise at fairs and events in his homeland.
“The inventor no longer makes them but I had the building plans,” he said.
“My brother-in-law works at a school in Antwerp and he got the students to make the box over two years.
“Community events company Out of the Box then added some paint and sound effects and then it was tested at the Rottnest Island Carnivale, where it was very popular.
“It can be exciting but a bit scary for kids but there are emergency exits and plenty of holes for air circulation.”
Mr Roaen said the council tried to introduce something new each year.
“This year we have five new attractions, including the Maze Box but they aren’t always big, expensive activities,” he said.
The Town of Victoria Park is holding a citizenship ceremony to welcome new Australians followed by the presentation of the Australia Day Citizenship Award winners from 9am at Memorial Gardens in Victoria Park.
