PFAS are known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, PFOA and PFOS.
People with private bores near areas where contamination has been found are urged to test their water for levels of PFAS
PFAS was contained in 3M Brightwater firefighting foam used at Perth Airport until 2003, and in smaller amounts in a replacement foam used until 2010. ■Firefighting foam containing PFAS has been used at eight WA airports and 12 Department of Defence sites across the nation.
The WA Environmental Protection Authority was advised of the potential for toxic chemical contamination at Perth Airport, including surrounding areas, in July 2010.
