Centrelink office closed

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - NEWS - Sophie Moore

THE Centrelink and Medicare offices in Belmont Forum closed on February 1.

A pop-up booth offering online services has been set up opposite Woolworths in the centre, but people who need over-the-counter assistance or face-to-face appointments will now have to visit the Cannington Service Centre on Albany Highway.

Shopping centre owner Perron Group did not extend the Centrelink lease because the centre is undergoing a $65 million, 18-month redevelopment.

A Perron Group spokesperson said the plan was to find a new permanent shopfront for Centrelink in the redeveloped centre.

Department of Human Services general manager Hank Jongen said staff could assist people to register for a myGov account and show them how to access services online, including Medicare, Centrelink, child support and the Australian Taxation Office, using one login and password.

“Four self-service terminals will be available in the pop-up location, where people can do much of their regular Centrelink and Medicare business through their online account,” he said.

The pop-up shop also has a drop-off box for Medicare rebate claims. The services in Belmont Forum will be open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

The Cannington Service Centre is at 1296 Albany Highway, Cannington.
