Chelsea fans loud, proud

PERTH supporters of English Premier League giant Chelsea have promised plenty of noise when the club visits WA in 2018.

The four-time Premier League winners will play Perth Glory in an international friendly at Perth Stadium in July or August next year.

Cockburn council worker Ossie Pereira is among more than 100 members of Chelsea’s Perth-based supporters club.

He said he was thrilled with the announcement.

“I first heard of this game last year and contacted Chelsea FC, but they wouldn’t confirm anything, so I thought it was false,” he said.

“But now that it has been confirmed, I’m over the moon.

“This game will certainly put WA on the football map and hopefully other English Premier League teams will think about coming here to play, as well as playing over east.”

With the football experience about much more than just the action on the pitch, Mr Pereira said supporters were keen to ensure they generate plenty of noise.

“For the Sydney game in 2015, we had all the supporters club members sitting together at one end of the ground, which created quite a bit of noise,” he said.

“As most members know quite a few Chelsea songs, the decibels were very high on that night for most of the game.”

The deal is expected to attract 15,000 interstate and international visitors and pour $15 million into WA shops, hotels, bars and other local attractions.
