Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - OPINION -

MINER Mineral Resources have announced that they will soon be shipping raw lithium ore to China by April 2017.

This ore will be processed in China, where the finished product will be sold on the international market.

This value added to our raw lithium ore will then be returned to Australia in the form of many finished products – possibly as storage batteries for our Chinese-made rooftop solar panels.

When this ore runs out all we will have is a hole in the ground .

Alcoa Australia sends bauxite dug out of Jarrahdale to China to be processed into alumina then smelted to make aluminium, thus bypassing Alcoa's own aging alumina processing plant in Kwinana.

Our future lies in valueadding to our vast mineral resources to create thousands of well paid jobs and increase the value of our exports.

We cannot continue this ‘dig it, grow it and ship it’ economy that it will only leave us with more holes in the ground. BERNIE WHITWORTH, Safety Bay.
