Emerging players selected
SEVERAL Victoria Park Xavier Hockey Club and Old Aquinians Hockey Club players have been selected in WA’s under-18 Women’s team.
Last year, Western Australia’s U18 Men’s team flew home from the National Championships as gold medal winners, while the State’s women claimed bronze.
They will now look to build on this success this year when they take to the field once again in Hobart between April 19 and 29.
Last week Hockey WA announced the State’s 2017 under-18 Men’s team for the National Championships.
Hockey WA high performance and under-18 men’s coach Tom Wickham said the past couple of weeks had been a tough process trying to iron out who the final 18 will be to travel to Hobart.
"Entering our teams into the PreSeason Cup tournament has been a great resource for us to gain better understanding of players and what they have to offer,” he said.
“It’s always a tough process when you have a group of young talented athletes competing for limited positions. However we are happy with the selections we have come to.
“We have selected athletes who we believe are ready to step up to the demands and expectations we require to put us into a position to win.
“The importance of selecting a team of players who can fit in and do what is required for the team was a huge part of the selection process.
“The athletes who have been selected as reserves are also athletes we believe are more than ready to step up to the challenge if called upon."
Last year’s under-18 men’s and women’s teams performed well.
