Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - STREET WATCH -

THE Over 55s Cycling Club is hoping to use Bike Week to encourage more seniors to get involved in the activity.

The club is holding 10km and 20km rides from Raphael Park in Victoria Park today from 9am.

With more than 350 members, the club holds rides around Perth, including from Victoria Park on Wednesdays.

Over 55s Cycling Club advocacy vicepresident Bruce Robinson said the club promoted fitness and enjoyment.

“It’s a combination of a social club and a cycling club; our objectives are to create good fellowship and to encourage people to ride,” he said.

“We usually ride in groups of around 10 and people ride in a speed that suits them, whether that is slow, medium or fast.”

Mr Robinson said the aim of today’s event was to help make people comfortable about cycling on roads.

“We want to attract people who have a bike but don’t ride much,” he said.

“When you ride in a group, you have people to help you with punctures and you can also talk and socialise.

“A lot of people are nervous about riding on roads but when you are with other people you can avoid the hazardous bits.

“There is evidence that riding a bicycle is good for your physical and mental health and the benefits outweigh the risks 20 to 1.”
