Art takes centre stage as artist Jahne Rees finishes off the eyecatching mural at Como Secondary College with the help of students.

ARTIST Jahne Rees has finished what he started at Como Secondary College with a colourful, eye-catching mural.

The Hamilton Hill artist painted a second mural at the school, 14 years after painting his first.

The mural was painted over four days from March 20 with the help of students during recess and lunch breaks.

The City of South Perth donated $2000 to have Rees as an artist-in -residence at the school.

In return, the school donated a piano to the City that was painted at the Angelo Street Marketplace event.

Rees said the mural was an extension on the themes raised in his first artwork at the school.

“The idea was the students were bricks in the wall, who would then sprout wings and fly into their futures,” he said.

“There is also the head in the centre with the gears in motion.”

Como Secondary School head of arts Monique Laves said about 20 visual arts and photography students helped.

“They were about to absorb Jahne’s techniques and engage with the work while taking care and pride,” she said.

“I wanted to promote the arts and have them create something largescale.”

Ms Laves said the piano would be able to be used at community events by the City.
