Fo­rum on penin­sula plans

RES­I­DENTS, de­vel­op­ers and City of South Perth staff met re­cently at the South Perth Sta­tion Precinct Plan­ning De­sign Fo­rum to dis­cuss plans and pro­pos­als for the penin­sula.

The five-day fo­rum took place largely at the South Perth Com­mu­nity Hall from March 13, with stake­hold­ers able to present and dis­cuss is­sues re­lat­ing to plan­ning in the penin­sula.

City Deputy Mayor Glenn Crid­land said a wide range of in­ter­ests and points of view were rep­re­sented by the par­tic­i­pants and were dis­cussed openly and re­spect­fully.

“The fo­rum pro­vided the City and par­tic­i­pants with a huge amount of ma­te­rial to con­sider, with top­ics rang­ing from the big-pic­ture vision of what the area might be in the fu­ture, through to con­sid­er­a­tion of built form, pub­lic spa­ces, trans­port and gov­er­nance,” he said.

About 70 peo­ple at­tended the first day of the fo­rum.

Urban de­sign and town plan­ning firm Robert­sDay co­founder Mike Day gave an in­tro­duc­tory pre­sen­ta­tion.

Af­ter that, the group boarded buses for a tour of the precinct, in­clud­ing walk­ing and stop­ping to dis­cuss is­sues at a num­ber of key sites.

About 60 peo­ple were present at the hall on the sec­ond day of the fo­rum when Col­liers In­ter­na­tional prop­erty ex­pert John Del Dosso spoke about the com­mer­cial con­text of de­vel­op­ment in the precinct.

Also speak­ing on the day was GTA Con­sul­tants traf­fic and trans­port ex­pert Tim Judd, Ge­off Warn of Don­ald­son and Warn ar­chi­tects, Peter Ciemi­tis of Robert­sDay, Howard Mitchell of EPCAD land­scape ar­chi­tects and Ross Duck­ham of Robert­sDay.

Is­sues talked about on the day in­cluded man­ag­ing pub­lic space and traf­fic around the in­ter­sec­tions of Mends Street and Mill Point Road and the im­por­tance of or­derly and proper plan­ning pro­cesses.

On the third day of the fo­rum, the City’s de­sign team sketched plans around options for re­con­fig­ur­ing of and traf­fic calm­ing on Mill Point Road and Labouchere Road near the in­ter­sec­tion of Mends Street, as well as ideas for a town square be­tween Mends Street and the zoo.

Fi­nal meet­ings with key stake­hold­ers were held on the last day of the fo­rum on March 17, which was also ded­i­cated to pro­duc­ing de­signs, plans and draft rec­om­men­da­tions for pre­sen­ta­tion to the com­mu­nity in the evening.
