WARS MEMORABILIA ON SHOW

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - LIFESTYLE -

KAREN Marr’s passion for everything related to the World Wars will be on display during the Australian Heritage Festival.

The Manning library officer and Westralian Great War Living History Association volunteer will have memorabilia she has collected on display at the South Perth Library from April 18 to May 21.

“My passion came learning about the wars in primary school and then I got to go on a tour of Gallipoli and Egypt when I was 15,” she said.

“I remember Anzac Cove being very peaceful. This was before it became more commercial; it was an amazing scene at the beach.”

Mrs Marr said she was at an event in Northam about four years ago when she saw the association’s items and asked to join.

“There are about 30 members, most of them are males, and some of the popular items are weapons such as guns and rifles, while some other members have incredible medical items,” she said.

“In my collection I have postcards that were sent from Europe back to Australia. They were the only thing that connected people.

“Now our links are immediate through phone calls or via the internet, but back then you had to wait for the post so there was something precious and special about that link.

“I also have outfits worn by brides before the war, who would then be waiting at home for their husbands.”

Mrs Marr said it was an incredible feeling to share the items with the public.

“I definitely am proud to be able to have the resources to collect everything and then showcase it,” she said.

“I source the items from overseas in places like the UK but also Australia through eBay or Etsy.”

The theme of this year’s festival is Having a Voice and celebrates stories through different voices.

South Perth Library will explore the voice of Women in Times of War and will present a series of events, including a photographic exhibition that recognise and honour the war efforts of women.

Deborah Burrows, author of Ambulance Girls, and Melinda Tognini, author of Many Hearts, One Voice, will join the library’s Words with Wine series on April 20 and 27.
