ART SEASON A SUCCESS
THE Town of Victoria Park Arts Season is bringing more interest into arts and culture.
This is evident at the Victoria Park Centre for the Arts, which has 13 events during the course of the season.
Centre general manager and artistic director Clare Szmekura said she was encouraged by the response to the Arts Season, with many people asking to be involved.
“We doubled our average number of people coming through the centre per year during the first year of the Arts Season last year,” she said.
“That was continued this year with about 200 people coming through each week.
“The idea of the Arts Season is to remove the barriers and allow people to experience art.”
Szmekura said multi-cultural events such as the Art of Empowerment and the Reach 1 Teach 1 hip-hop youth engagement workshops had been highlights.
“We’ve had four exhibitions during the season, including holding the Town of Victoria Park Art Collection, which included a selection of works,” she said.
“The Creative Connections exhibition linked people living with disabilities with poets, while the Be My Koorda Support Group Visual Arts Workshops included kids living autism with the works included in the Express Yourself exhibition. Express Yourself includes creative expressions that can be 2D, 3D or anything such as dance, theatre or music.”
