FROM refugees to the en­vi­ron­ment, Work­ing Voices Choir mem­bers sing about is­sues close to their hearts.

Among its mem­bers are Vic­to­ria Park res­i­dents Stephen and Su­san Hast­ings, who have been in­volved in unions dur­ing their work­ing lives.

Mr Hast­ings joined in 2005 af­ter be­ing brought along by a friend.

“I’ve been in­ter­ested in singing for most of my adult life and I knew the then con­duc­tor Bernard Car­ney, who is a well­known folk singer,” he said.

“For me, the so­cial jus­tice as­pect and the singing were im­por­tant.”

Fel­low mem­ber and Vic­to­ria Park res­i­dent Cherry Ray said the group sang at May Day cel­e­bra­tions, picket lines and demon­stra­tions.

On May 13, Work­ing Voices Choir mu­si­cal di­rec­tor Dr Rae­lene Bru­insma will lead a work­shop at the War­ren Lake Hall on Teak­wood Avenur in Wood­lands from 10am to 4pm.
