Redback rebound for women, men

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - SPORT - Chris Pike

THE Perth Redbacks men’s and women’s teams bounced back from disappointing losses on Friday night to continue their solid starts to the season.

On Friday night at Belmont Oasis, the women’s team lost 79-63 to the Perry Lakes Hawks, after coming into the game on a threegame wining streak.

Perry Lakes proved too strong for the four quarters, putting their foot down in the second and fourth periods to end up recording the 16-point victory to improve to 7-0 on the season.

Nat Burton had a terrific battle all night with Redbacks import Emilee Harmon, with Burton finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The men’s team fell to the Hawks 90-85 in the second game of the double header at Belmont Oasis.

After being outplayed on Monday night against Stirling by Ash Litterick, the challenge was in front of Hawks big man Brian Carlwell to deliver against the Redbacks and he was unstoppable in the first half up against Perth teenager Kyle Bowen.

Carlwell answered the challenge in remarkably dominant fashion with 13 points and five rebounds in the first quarter and 20 points and 10 boards in the opening half.

The Redbacks simply had nobody who could match his size and he was catching the ball low and grabbing rebounds at will, and putting the ball in the hole with little that Bowen, Shawn Redhage or anyone else at Perth could do.

Carlwell finished with 28 points, 20 rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots.

On Saturday night at Wally Hagan Stadium, the women’s team rebounded with a 73-70 win over the Cockburn Cougars

Emilee Harmon battled hard on Friday night against the Hawks bigs, who put plenty of physical pressure on her.

She still contributed well and then bounced back on Saturday with 27 points and 12 rebounds on the back of shooting 9-of-15 from the floor and 9-of-12 at the line.

Rebecca Benson shot just 6-of15 for the Redbacks but had a good all-round game with 19 points, three assists and three steals, while Ajay Johnson contributed 14 points, three rebounds and three assists.

The men’s team followed on with a comfortable 107-89 win over the Cougars.

Shawn Redhage had a night out for the Redbacks, with the Perth Wildcats legend delivering 46 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and two steals on the back of shooting 18-of-28 from the field and a perfect 9-of-9 at the foul line.

He had strong support from Ben Smith who had 26 points, four rebounds and four assists nailing 4-of-6 of his three-point attempts.
