Mother of all concerts

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - OPINION -

THE South Side Symphony Orchestra will perform music out of this world during a Mother’s Day concert at the South Perth Community Hall.

The Melville-based orchestra, which has about 45 members, will perform with a choir for the first time when they team up with the Perth Undergraduate Choral Society.

Among the music that the orchestra will play is The Planets, an orchestral suite by English composer Gustav Holst.

Orchestra president Irene Wright said the theme of the concert was celestial works.

“The Planets are ethereal works, but there will also be some music from the Romantic era. The music is for mothers to enjoy, it won’t be anything too full on, it’ll be easy to enjoy,” she said.

Mrs Wright said the orchestra had played varied styles of music since forming in 2011.

“We have performed the traditional format of overtures, concerto and symphony,” she said.

“In the past we have been contracted for performances at the Serpentine Airfield and Claremont Tennis Club.”
