Alec relishing pressure of being best

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - SPORT -

THERE are few young sportspeople who can say they are the best in the country at what they do, but Alec Davison can.

Already this year, the 15-yearold member of East Victoria Park’s Eclipse Performance Centre has competed at the School Sport Australia Triathlon Championships and the Australian Cross Triathlon Championships, two national competitions where he was up against the best athletes in the country in his age group.

Rather than daunt him, the added pressure stirred him on and Alec brought home two gold medals.

They are just the latest in a long list of accolades that includes a third-place finish at the National Triathlon Series Youth Championships, winning WA Triathlete of the Year for his age group for the past three years and gaining selection for the Junior Elite National team to compete at the World Championships in Canada this August.

Alec said he was looking forward to continuing his strong start to 2017 when he steps up to the next level.

“It’s a nice feeling knowing that you’re the best U17 athlete in Australia on a given day,” he said.

“(The World Championships) just feels like I’m going to race elsewhere, but at the same time it’s pretty cool to know that I’ll be competing against the best junior cross triathletes from all over the world.”

Nominated for the Community Newspaper Group’s Local Sports Star awards, Alec trains as much as 12 times a week while juggling schoolwork and mentoring his younger sister in the sport.

He said taking up triathlon was one of the best decisions in his life.

“Triathlon has so many loveable things about it, but the level of camaraderie is one thing not many people expect to feel, just because it’s an individual sport.

“It doesn’t matter whether you came first or last or didn’t race at all, you’re still part of the Tri family.

“One other thing I love is the training and how variable it is – you could be riding 110km in the hills one day and doing sprints out of the water the next.”
