RESIDENTS on Teague Street in Victoria Park are concerned with the lack of consultation from Ursula Frayne Catholic College after the school demolished three properties.

RESIDENTS on Teague Street in Victoria Park are concerned with the lack of consultation from Ursula Frayne Catholic College after the school demolished three properties.

Teague Street residents Rowena and Kim Holland contacted the Southern Gazette after the houses at number 20, 28 and 30 were demolished in the past three months.

The school has since revealed that it plans to turn the vacant blocks into “green spaces.”

“They haven’t contacted any of the residents about demolishing the properties or about their future plans; we don’t know anything and when we contacted the council, they didn’t know as well,” Mrs Holland said.

“They’ve removed jacarandas, conifers and other trees, but if they are going to create gardens then why did they need to do that?”

She said she questioned whether the properties were demolished because of the Town of Victoria Park’s proposed Amendment 73, which aims to create a special control area around large parts of Victoria Park, where residents will need development approvals to demolish ‘original dwellings’.

“The three properties were all pre-1945, with number 28 being of Federation style and the two others being workers cottages,” Mrs Holland said.

In a statement, school principal Geoff Mills said “over the past 15 years Ursula Frayne Catholic College has been acquiring properties adjacent to the Duncan Street campus with the intention to create new opportunities as the needs of the College evolve”.

“Recently you may have noticed vacant spaces on Teague Street.

“The College is now in a position to consider the best utilisation of these in promoting student and community wellbeing.

“The focus of the College is on creating green spaces, such as recreational, sensory and reflective gardens with the aim of broadening the tree canopy and providing corridors of green within the Town of Victoria Park.”

Town of Victoria Park chief executive Anthony Vuleta said the school had not consulted with the council about its plans.

“The school’s response to date has been that the school board has not decided what the use of the properties will be; it is our intention to meet the school to discuss its future directions,” he said.
