Islamic college set to grow

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - NEWS - Jessica Warriner

THE Kewdale campus of the Australian Islamic College is set to expand to accommodate more primary school students.

The planning application was carried eight votes to one at a City of Belmont meeting on May 23.

A new two-storey classroom will be built to allow extra primary school classes, subject to a six-metre set-back from the lot boundary to Peace Loop.

This was an increase on the previous proposed set-back of 3.86 metres.

A transportable classroom, bus wash-down bay and modifications to parking and vehicle access were also approved.

Councillor Janet Powell said the application was received in September and a number of people worked together for a ‘win-win situation’.

“One by one, we went through it with the College, the council and the community, and they’re all happy,” she said.

Seven objections were received during the public advertising period, largely due to potential traffic impacts, but the school has addressed the concerns through provision of a parking management plan.

The council has also requested that the school revise its master plan within six months of the approval date to show all existing buildings and the future development of the college over a 10- to 15-year time frame.
