Giant sunflowers brighten up the day

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - NEWS -

PHYLLIS Bradford has helped brighten up the days of staff and residents at Mercy Place Lathlain after growing tall sunflowers.

The stunning 2.5m-tall sunflowers were planted about three months ago and have grown far bigger than the age care resident expected.

“You can feel down and out not being in your own house,” she said.

“When you are in a nursing home, you can feel like you are here to die but you need to change your mind and I keep myself active.”

Ms Bradford said one of the secrets to the growth of the sunflowers was a bit of “tender loving care”.

“My motto in life is faith, trust and respect to all humans and animals, so I’m proud of what I’ve done,” she said.

“The feedback that I’ve received from staff and residents has been great; there have been plenty of people who have come to look at it.”
