THE memory of water ski legend Frank Bonney will live on after a plaque in his honour was unveiled at the Burswood Water Sports Centre.

The plaque was unveiled on June 11 as part of the Heirisson Island Tournament Water Ski Club and Tournament Water Skiing WA presentation day.

Frank’s daughter Heather Bonney said it was a beautiful day and her father would have been smiling about it.

“A number of people spoke during the day, including Chas Hewson from the WA Water Ski Association’s tournament division,” she said.

“He spoke about how my father was always interested in training the juniors, including himself. It didn’t matter if they were a winner or a beginner.

“My father was the first waterskier to be honoured at the site. He was a pioneer.

“I was very emotional on the day; I gave a tribute about him.

“This means a lot to the Bonney family. He dedicated his whole life to the sport and he would be chuffed at being honoured.”

The Tasmanian-born champion water-skier moved to Perth in 1955 and had his HPC Pest Control and water skiing business on Burswood Road for 45 years.

Mr Bonney was 17 times WA State Slalom Champion and seven times Australian Slalom Champion.

He also helped found the Burswood Watersports Water Ski area. Mr Bonney died in 2012 at the age of 84.

His life is remembered in the book Water Skiing Legend The Life & Times of Frank Bonney: The History of Water Skiing, which Mrs Bonney wrote with water skier Jon Broderick.
