Make a clean start

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - FIT FOR BUSINESS -

EVER wanted to make a difference to the environment but did not know where to start?

July marks the start of Community Newspaper Group’s Cleaner Communities campaign – a big push across all our newspapers and online to get local people to think a bit more carefully about the impact they have on the environment.

Premier Mark McGowan has thrown his support behind the campaign, saying it was important for good habits to start in the home.

“It’s all about applying common sense and making recycling and waste management a part of everyday life,” he said.

“It’s good to start when your kids are young, so initiatives like this are ingrained in their formative years.

“As a family we always bin our rubbish properly.

“We put aside recycling and do a bin sort as we go.

“Although it seems basic, this is something we all could do to contribute to a cleaner community.”

Mr McGowan’s recently elected State Government has a number of initiatives in place to reduce waste and help the environment – including the Waste Wise Schools program – and is investigating a Statewide ban on single-use plastic bags. “It’s important that we all do our bit to protect the environment and be as efficient as we can be,” he said.

“There is a role for everyone to play in waste management, reduction and keeping communities clean.”

Over the next month, we’ll bring you local stories about people keeping their communities clean, as well as some practical tips you can use to help in your own way.
