Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - OPINION -

I WISH to thank the City of South Perth for seeking community feedback on the Westralian Centre proposal and thank the majority of councillors who wisely voted to reject the proposal.

The centre had been earmarked for Sir James Mitchell Park.

I can confirm that many South Perth residents and people who value Perth’s green spaces and open vistas were dismayed by the proposal and its proposed location.

Some details sat fairly poorly with people who had an opportunity to look beyond the architectural sketches. For example, the ongoing maintenance costs for the facility which would have been borne by the City ratepayers; the poor connectivity between the proposed centre and existing South Perth tourist trails; the extent of the earthworks proposed; the likelihood that views to Perth would be disrupted for people using the park; the lack of details on parking and service roads for the facility; the short time frame proposed for completion; and the lack of certainty about funding sources beyond the City’s coffers.

All are strong reasons for the thumbs-down it received. JENNIFER NEVARD, South Perth
