Abo­rig­i­nal cul­ture on show

THE Ruth Faulkner Pub­lic Li­brary’s mini mu­seum has a new ex­hi­bi­tion cel­e­brat­ing Abo­rig­i­nal cul­ture fol­low­ing Naidoc Week.

Wel­come to Goor­gyp will be on dis­play un­til Septem­ber, show­ing the Bel­mont Mu­seum’s col­lec­tion of indige­nous arte­facts.

The ex­hi­bi­tion is named af­ter the Whad­juk Noon­gar word for the Bel­mont area, with goor­gyp trans­lat­ing to ‘a cold place’.

The theme for this year’s Naidoc Week was ‘Our Lan­guages Mat­ter’ and this has been in­cor­po­rated into the new ex­hi­bi­tion. Vis­i­tors will have the op­por­tu­nity to learn lo­cal Noon­gar di­alect at the mu­seum, along with ex­plor­ing the his­tory of the land­mark 1967 ref­er­en­dum.

The mini mu­seum is open 9am-5pm Mon­days to Fri­days in the Ruth Faulkner Pub­lic Li­brary in Cloverdale.
