Aboriginal culture on show
THE Ruth Faulkner Public Library’s mini museum has a new exhibition celebrating Aboriginal culture following Naidoc Week.
Welcome to Goorgyp will be on display until September, showing the Belmont Museum’s collection of indigenous artefacts.
The exhibition is named after the Whadjuk Noongar word for the Belmont area, with goorgyp translating to ‘a cold place’.
The theme for this year’s Naidoc Week was ‘Our Languages Matter’ and this has been incorporated into the new exhibition. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn local Noongar dialect at the museum, along with exploring the history of the landmark 1967 referendum.
The mini museum is open 9am-5pm Mondays to Fridays in the Ruth Faulkner Public Library in Cloverdale.
