Shop till you pop-up for art

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - OPINION -

THE public will be able to check out some pop-up art while they are doing their shopping thanks to a collaboration between the Victoria Park Centre for the Arts and a group of Perth artists.

An unused shop at Victoria Park Central has been transformed into an arts space, with the first artists on show being South Perth resident Karin Godecke and Leeming artist Asta Lander.

The duo will have their work on display until the end of August before another five exhibitions will take place in the space until November 9.

Godecke said the opportunity to showcase their artwork was an opportunity too good to miss.

“We don’t have access to space like this and we’ve always wanted to put on an exhibition together,” she said.

“My work is dreamlike and whimsical and they are acrylic on canvas.

“We have had some fabulous people come in and they’ve told us they really like the exhibition because they can go shopping and check it out.”

Lander said she was putting together 100 portraits of people with animals and some of these were on display.

“They are all stories that you wouldn’t expect,” she said.

“I’ve completed a portrait of Mozart and his pet starling, which he bought in a pet store and became his muse.”

Victoria Park Centre for the Arts general manager and artistic director d472737 Clare Szmekura said a relationship between the arts centre and the shopping centre had allowed for the opportunity to transpire.

“It’s incredibly exciting to have this gallery space and it’s certainly a different atmosphere for artists to showcase their work and for the public to experience this too,” she said.
