Re­gion’s best ju­niors se­lected

THE qual­ity of the re­gion’s hockey play­ers has been high­lighted again, with a num­ber of lo­cal play­ers picked in WA’s un­der-13 state teams.

Wes­ley South Perth’s Jack Cudby, Mitchell McGrath, Char­lie McIn­tyre and Ni­cholas Ng have been named in the boys team along­side Vic­to­ria Park Xavier’s Jeremy Mayne and Daniel Frangs.

Vic­to­ria Park Xavier’s Rachel Askey, Taneka Doney-Vati and Ali­cia Tory are in the girls squad with AW Reds play­ers Grace Fos­ter and Sa­man­tha Pope.

The 2017 U13 Aus­tralian Car­ni­val is tak­ing place in Perth be­tween Septem­ber 28 and Oc­to­ber 8.

More than 500 kids were in­volved in Hockey WA’s U13 Ju­nior De­vel­op­ment pro­gram, which started last Septem­ber and pro­vided a num­ber of op­por­tu­ni­ties for these young play­ers to im­prove their skills and de­velop their game.

A to­tal of 73 young­sters now con­tinue their progress in the State Team en­vi­ron­ment, as they train and prepare for the up­com­ing event.

The event is sched­uled to run along­side the 2017 Aus­tralian Hockey League in or­der to give these as­pir­ing young ath­letes the op­por­tu­nity to play side by side with their Kook­aburra, Hockeyroo and other AHL he­roes.

Hockey WA path­ways co-or­di­na­tor Michael Cake said there had been a fo­cus on de­vel­op­ing a broad co­hort of fu­ture stars to help grow and strengthen the game.
