Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - FRONT PAGE - Bronwyn Donovan

THE City of South Perth is set to endorse its Draft Local Planning Strategy tonight as the first step in a review of its Local Planning Scheme.

The scheme was first gazetted in April 2003 and will guide and inform planning and development within the City over the next 10 to 15 years.

Since being gazetted, about 40 amendments have been made to the current scheme, which sparked a council resolution in June 2017 to begin a review.

A report in the City’s August council agenda recommends council endorse the draft strategy, which will be forwarded to the WA Planning Commission before going out for public consultation.

In a deputation at a briefing session last week, ratepayer Mark Paskos suggested that council defer its decision to reconsider various aspects of the draft, such as aligning the density to the Perth and Peel @ 3.5million report.

But despite various councillors questioning whether deferring the item for a few months due to its importance would be appropriate, officers maintained that progressing the draft was “best practice”.

Before preparing the draft, the City undertook preliminary community engagement with 172 community members and 103 stakeholders to form key issues for the document, including increasing density levels thoughtfully.
