Park cottage to be demolished
THE Town of Victoria Park will demolish a cottage on the corner of Lathlain Park as part of the redevelopment of the area.
The council approved concept plans for zone 2 and 2X of the Lathlain Park Redevelopment Project during a meeting on August 8, which will see the Caretaker’s Cottage removed.
The cottage is estimated to have been built in the 1920s and although it is not heritage-listed, many community members have called for it to remain.
Community members had asked when the cottage will be destroyed but no timeline had been set.
Lathlain resident Luana Lisandro said she was disappointed that the council chose not to delay the decision to demolish the cottage.
“I don’t think the council fully looked at other uses of the cottage or how costs could have been partly borne out by another party,” she said,
“I don’t think the arguments presented by council that there are other facilities in the area that can be used by community groups was accurate as council had not fully investigated population pressures as well as other options for the retention of the cottage.
“I’m still hoping that there is time and the decision can be rescinded as others have for Lathlain Park.”
Town Mayor Trevor Vaughan said the concept plan showed the area near the cottage would include a hardstand parking area and an additional overflow turfed parking area that was to be used on game days for the Perth Demons VIP Parking.
