Sculpture stolen from public park
TOWN of Victoria Park residents are urged to contact Crime Stoppers if they have any information that can help track down a popular public artwork that was stolen from Duncan Street Reserve on August 15.
The sculpture Hyatti’ (You are my all, my everything) by Ayad Alqaragholli was forcibly removed from its concrete and metal base at the corner of Duncan Street and Sunbury Road in Victoria Park sometime that afternoon.
Mayor Trevor Vaughan said public art was an important and valuable asset for the community and he was deeply saddened by the theft.
“This is a terrible loss for the community who welcomed and enjoyed this artwork for the past two years,” he said.
“It is one of many beloved public artworks in the Town.
“To think that someone has just brazenly stolen it is devastating for everyone, especially the artist.
“I urge anyone who lives nearby or might have been passing the area to contact police with information, no matter how small it might be.”
Alqar-agholli said news of the theft had shocked and upset him greatly.
The artwork is valued at $44,000 and was installed in 2015.
