THE 2017 search for Western Australia’s brightest sporting talent – and the parents, coaches, officials and volunteers who make it all possible – has wrapped with an incredible list of winners.

Held at Community News’ head office in the City last Wednesday, the 2017 Local Sports Star awards highlighted the exceptional athletes within our sporting community, from those making their name at a state, national and international level, to others who make their club tick.

Two groups of rugby league and rugby union players from Mandurah who came together to form an under-16 team that could play both codes were rewarded with the WA team award for Young Sporting Spirit.

Junior triathlete Alec Davison, of Fremantle, was named the south region’s Individual Junior Sports Star, and Halls Head basketballer Thomas Woods, an aspiring basketball coach, won the Young Sporting Spirit award.

Tingara Netball Club stalwart Keryn Rae was recognised for her tireless volunteering with the State award for Service to Sport.

Awards were presented by Toni Farnworth, from Perth Lynx and Hockeyroo Aleisha Power, who also chatted to winners, posed for photos and signed autographs.
