People urged to join Finley pool committee

- By Sophie Burge

The Finley War Memorial Swimming Pool annual general meeting will be held at 7.30pm next Tuesday, at the Finley Club.

The pool, which is a Berrigan Shire owned facility, cannot legally operate without a community committee.

Committee president Robyn O’Leary, who has been in the role for four years, said she is stepping down due to other commitments.

Only four people attended last year’s AGM and Mrs O’Leary feared the future of Finley’s public swimming pool was in jeopardy.

She is once again urging people to join the committee to benefit the broader community

‘‘A lot of people assume the pool is run by Berrigan Shire Council because it’s council owned, however that’s not the case,’’ Mrs O’Leary said.

‘‘It is run and managed by a group of volunteers. Both the pool and surrounding grounds are beautifully maintained, and we have very proudly received many positive comments from visitors to our town about the pool.

‘‘We have tried to run the pool to benefit the community by having varied operating hours and continue to host the successful Learn to Swim program offered by Sport and Recreation.

‘‘We also successfully negotiated with Berrigan Shire to re-open the diving board which provides excellent entertainment.’’

At the AGM, all positions will be declared vacant.

Community members will have the opportunity to have their say and have a positive impact on the pool’s operation as an active member of the committee.

The committee meets on the first Tuesday of each month throughout the year.
