Autumn Cup ‘crown’ for Wangaratta horse

-

Wangaratta horse Victorian Crown was the winner of the third annual Finley Autumn Cup, which was held on Saturday at the Berrigan racecourse.

Ridden by apprentice jockey Megan Taylor, the seven year-old gelding was locked in a tight battle with Svetla’s Star.

The race came right down to the wire with Victorian Crown ($5.50) pipping Svetla’s Star at the post by half a head with Jordana Falls 11⁄4 lengths behind in third over the 1400m race.

The title was the gelding’s first win under trainer Russell Green.

‘‘To win any race is important and a thrill, so I’m certainly happy with our win,’’ Green said.

Owners of the winner came from near and far, including the Northern Territory, Gunbower, Benalla and Wangaratta, and were ecstatic with the win.

‘‘He’s (Victorian Crown) off to Dubbo in a couple of weeks for a $50,000 race,’’ Green said.

‘‘He’s been consistent and I have hopes he’ll go well.’’

The Jim and Eileen Fisher Memorial Maiden Plate (1200m) had some local flavour with Jerilderie horse Zarsupreme ($4.60) having his first win.

Trained by Ross Purcell, the three yearold gelding finished a half length in front of second placed Whiskey Business.

In other races, Pieceofeight ($2.60 fav.) took out the Col Tudor Memorial Class 1 Handicap, Villicana ($2 fav.) won the Finley Maiden Plate, and the Western Front RSL Benchmark 50 Handicap was won by Doogan’s Destiny ($4).
