Finley teacher housing development completed
A $650,000 housing development project for Finley based teachers is now complete.
The new flexible design accommodation at 63 Wollamai St has been purpose-built for teachers and can be converted into either two two-bedroom units, or one three-bedroom unit and one single bedroom unit.
Funded by the NSW Government, the new units replace ‘‘old stock’’ and are considered important to attract and retain teachers.
Finley High School principal Helen McRae said she believes two teachers have already relocated to the units from the older style units already available in the town.
‘‘We can now offer quality, modern accommodation to our teachers.
‘‘We already have some good housing, but it is a little outdated and these units are ultra-modern.
‘‘This development will help us attract people to live and teach in Finley, and to keep them here.
‘‘The teachers can live in Finley rather than other towns, so our local teachers can be part of the community.’’
Finley Public School principal Derek Noffke said in addition to the new units, the NSW Government is also undertaking an upgrade of all other teacher housing in the Finley region.
He said this would be an incentive for teachers to pursue a career in the Southern Riverina.
‘‘These new units are a great facility for the community in trying to encourage teachers to our region,’’ he said.
‘‘That is turn can only help learning outcomes.’’
Property NSW chief executive officer Brett Newman said the new units are specifically designed to provide more housing for teachers at Finley’s three schools.
‘‘In many rural and regional areas there is limited accommodation available in the rental market and what is available often fails to meet the needs of teachers and their families,” Mr Newman said.
Member for Murray Adrian Piccoli said last week the homes would provide added comfort to local teachers.
He also said the construction had benefited local businesses, with local trades supplying a number of products and services.
The development project was first announced in January this year.
