Howard claims medal ahead of Blighty duo

Lucy Howard has ce­mented her po­si­tion as one of the all-time greats of the Pi­cola Dis­trict Net­ball League north-west com­pe­ti­tion.

Howard claimed her fourth A grade league best-and-fairest award, polling 20 votes at Mon­day night’s count.

The De­niliquin Rovers’ star shooter has pro­duced an­other scin­til­lat­ing year, help­ing her team post the high­est num­ber of goals in the com­pe­ti­tion.

Howard (nee Bee­hag) ac­cepted the tro­phy fol­low­ing a stun­ning fin­ish to the vote count.

Trail­ing the lead­ers by a sole vote head­ing into the last round of com­pe­ti­tion, Howard was deemed best-on-court in the final match of the sea­son against Pi­cola United.

As a re­sult she claimed the award by two votes over joint run­ners-up and Blighty team­mates Demi Blake and Rhi­an­nan Maxwell.

Howard’s dom­i­nance of the league trans­fers to her home club, hav­ing won a best-and-fairest in all five sea­sons she has played at Deni Rovers.

Mathoura’s Shan­non Mills claimed the B grade league best-and-fairest with 28 votes, two ahead of her Tim­ber­cut­ters team­mate Ka­t­rina Wip­pell.

In a shift from the trend of other win­ners, Strath­mer­ton’s Jes­sica Bai­ley had her named en­graved on the C grade best-and­fairest award, de­spite the Bull­dogs not mak­ing the fi­nals.

With a pul­veris­ing first three quar­ters of the sea­son, Bai­ley led the pack with her 18 votes af­ter round 15 be­fore Ju­dith Karakai (Ber­ri­gan) caught up to fin­ish sec­ond polling 17 votes.

Mathoura’s Tayla Git­tens was a run­away win­ner of the C re­serve medal, with 26 votes, well ahead of Blighty’s Lou Han­mer who polled 17.

Tocumwal young gun Gra­cie Reid claimed the league’s Ris­ing Star award, with the un­der-17 league best-and-fairest win­ner also a mem­ber in the Bloods’ A grade side.
