Howard claims medal ahead of Blighty duo
Lucy Howard has cemented her position as one of the all-time greats of the Picola District Netball League north-west competition.
Howard claimed her fourth A grade league best-and-fairest award, polling 20 votes at Monday night’s count.
The Deniliquin Rovers’ star shooter has produced another scintillating year, helping her team post the highest number of goals in the competition.
Howard (nee Beehag) accepted the trophy following a stunning finish to the vote count.
Trailing the leaders by a sole vote heading into the last round of competition, Howard was deemed best-on-court in the final match of the season against Picola United.
As a result she claimed the award by two votes over joint runners-up and Blighty teammates Demi Blake and Rhiannan Maxwell.
Howard’s dominance of the league transfers to her home club, having won a best-and-fairest in all five seasons she has played at Deni Rovers.
Mathoura’s Shannon Mills claimed the B grade league best-and-fairest with 28 votes, two ahead of her Timbercutters teammate Katrina Wippell.
In a shift from the trend of other winners, Strathmerton’s Jessica Bailey had her named engraved on the C grade best-andfairest award, despite the Bulldogs not making the finals.
With a pulverising first three quarters of the season, Bailey led the pack with her 18 votes after round 15 before Judith Karakai (Berrigan) caught up to finish second polling 17 votes.
Mathoura’s Tayla Gittens was a runaway winner of the C reserve medal, with 26 votes, well ahead of Blighty’s Lou Hanmer who polled 17.
Tocumwal young gun Gracie Reid claimed the league’s Rising Star award, with the under-17 league best-and-fairest winner also a member in the Bloods’ A grade side.
A grade’s top league vote getters: 20 Lucy Howard (Deni Rovers), 18 Demi Blake (Blighty), 18 Rhiannan Maxwell (Blighty), 14 Amy Carter (Strathmerton), 14 Leah Pate (Tocumwal), 13 Natalie Henthorn ( Deni Rovers), 13 Gracie Reid (Tocumwal), 13 Rebecca Ware (Berrigan), 12 Jackie Thorpe (Deniliquin Rovers).
