Finley ‘C’ win thriller

Southern Riverina news - - SPORT -

Finley C grade stormed to the second week of Murray League finals with a nail-biting win over a strong Tongala team at Mulwala on Saturday. Scores, Finley 47 to Tongala 44. Great rebounding and defence work from Sasha Wood, Shannon Peasley, Renata Morris and Elyse Price, with the netball patiently brought down the court by Peta Gowans and Rhiannon MurphyRiddell.

This was beautifully topped off with some hard fought goals by Alex Russell and Paula Gowans.

The Cats go up against an in-form Mulwala side this Sunday.

C Reserve: Finley were up against Moama at their home court on Sunday.

A physical game didn’t rattle the Cats who stood tall and proved they could handle it.

Emma Evans and Bridget Tegart made the Moama shooters work extra hard with their tight defence.

Lori Parmley, Brittany Scott, Lauren Clarke and Georgie Sloane worked well to get the ball to star shooters Sally Bickerton and Karen Donkin who shot beautifully in windy conditions.

Finley never gave up and came away with a one-goal win, 31-30.

Under-15s: Sadly the 15s bowed out of the finals race with a 43-29 loss to Moama, who had the advantage of playing at home.

Under-13s: The Cats had a very close game against Deniliquin in Moama on Sunday, going down by three goals.

The lead changed regularly throughout the game with the girls creeping ahead by a couple of goals and then dropping back after a few errors.

Everyone on the team contributed and did their best under finals pressure where it can be a totally different ball game.

Mackenzie Hannan provided strong leads, accurate shooting and a positive voice for all four quarters.

Ruby Russell shot beautifully and turned defensive, intercepting the ball to bring it back to our attacking end and provide extra scoring opportunities.

Lilly-May Ogilvie stuck tight to her opponent and didn’t give her an inch.

Lucy-Jayne Burdon deflected the ball numerous times, intercepted and provided strong defensive pressure.

Jemma Coombs and Isabella Kelly worked tirelessly in defence against agile and tall shooters.

Olivia Ciccolini and Abbey Marshall were the link between the attack and defensive ends and provided drives and great passing.

Well done on a fantastic season — you should all be proud of your achievements.

Under-12s: It was a close and hectic game in the first final, against Nathalia.

Morgan Evans and Meg Marshall controlled the pace of the game in attack, also taking frequent intercepts.

Alyssa Denny and Amiliah Miaoudis kept pressure on the whole time. Sienna Burke and Lexie McGrath shot perfectly and also defended well.

Jasmine Burke was quick and always first to loose balls, while Jordan Gray and Cassidy Reynolds added pressure, fought for rebounds and were always there as back-up for the attackers.

Even though they didn’t quite make a comeback from those early few goals, the Finley 12s played an awesome game.

Scores, Nathalia 23 to Finley 16. Awards: Jordan Gray and Morgan Evans.
