Urquhart smashes record

Southern Riverina news - - SPORT -

Murray Urquhart smashed his way to a record 12th Finley Returned Soldiers Squash Club Men’s A Grade Championship on Friday night.

Urquhart came up against 2015 Champion Shaun Kable in the final.

The A and B Grade Championships haven’t occurred since Kable’s win due to a lack of numbers.

This year’s players were keen to participate in the four-week knockouts.

Players from all lines from the previous two competitions were eligible to participate in the championships.

The game between Urquhart and Kable started very controlled from both players as they started to warm up.

Although it was close, Urquhart put his game face on and defeated Kable in a close contest, 9-7.

The second game was dominated by Urquhart with his quick reflexes and accurate hits as Kable could only score handouts and no points, 9-0.

The last game for Urquhart provided many rallies which proved both players deserved to be in this final.

Kable tried his hardest to gain more points with several handouts won, but Urquhart came out on top with the result of 9-6 being the final game.

Urquhart broke the record previously held by John Lee (dec.), winning 11 championships in 12 seasons from 1969 to 1980.

Urquhart won his first title in 2002 but missed 2003, 2012 and the last championship knockout in 2015.

A massive tribute goes to John Lee for his enormous effort and a well deserved congratulations to Murray Urquhart for breaking this record of 37 years.

Earlier in the night was the Mixed B Grade Champion grand final match.

A new shield was created to accommodate for the number of players so the committee decided it was fair to Mix B Grade Men and Women together.

First time winner Damien Wilson overcame Lynda Whiley in the grand final and will be first to have his name engraved on the shield as Mixed B Grade Champion Player.

To start off with Whiley pulled all the moves to try and defeat quick moving Damien Wilson.

The first game was neck and neck with the game going to Wilson, 9-7.

Next game, Whiley had some trouble keeping up to Wilson as he dominated the court with his precise shots and quick movements generating a result of 9-4.

The third was the game Wilson had to win to claim the title but Whiley switched on and made Wilson work.

It came down to a long game with at least five minutes of pure handouts and no points.

In the end Wilson claimed the match ending on 10-9.

B Grade Mixed Champion Damien Wilson and A Grade Champion Murray Urquhart.
