How does the Melbourne Cup Calcutta work?

Every raffle ticket you buy improves your chance of being drawn as a temporary ‘owner’ of a horse.

On the day of the Calcutta, all the raffle tickets purchased are put in a barrel and all names drawn have a horse drawn from another.

All horses are then up for auction in a sweep-style process. The owner will get half the winning bid, with the remainder going into a prize pool.

Of course, you can bid for your own horse knowing that you are only paying half the price.

After the last horse is auctioned, the prize pool is worked out, with a certain percentage for first, second, third and last.
